Being Witch, Jaenelle rarely questioned the Darkness; the tug that would lead her to a certain place at just the right moment. Some would think that such unwavering loyalty to everything she was proved detrimental at times, but she was who she was. So when something called to her this time, she followed its path.

She paused a heartbeat away from the end of the path that led to her sister’s house. She saw the silhouette of Wilhelmina standing in the yard on this cool autumn night. She watched the wind lift her older sister’s hair just slightly and in the moonlight she could see the sadness on her sister’s face.

They both knew loss. They both knew pain. Jaenelle had willingly sacrificed herself two years ago to rid the Blood of the taint that had taken root so long ago. If not for the dreamers that had called for her and the kindred that fought with teeth and claws, she would have left her sister alone. Again. She knew that Wilhelmina didn’t blame her for the sacrifice she made, but she had wept for the potential loss. They all had till they knew for certain they would not lose her.

But Jaenelle had been blind to the amount of pain Wilhelmina would have gone through had she not made it. As she watched her sister turn and see her, Jaenelle knew that she could not and would not let her sister face anymore pain alone. The distance between them disappeared as Wilhelmina got closer and then it was gone as Jaenelle hugged her, feeling Wilhelmina’s arms wrap around her little sister. Tonight and together they would be each other’s support for the losses they had.

If only…

How many times since she purged the taint had she let a few of those flit through her mind? How many times did she overhear Lucivar or Daemon or Saetan wondering the same? She had told them that she lost nothing she regrets losing. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have any regrets at all.

Jaenelle brushed her hand through the water in the fountain as she let her mind wander to the regrets she usually kept far away. She never wanted her power, never wanted to rule. But she had to protect the Kindred. To protect those she loved. But she hadn’t protected them all, did she?

She didn’t keep Morton from dying and in turn didn’t protect her sister from her heart shattering. She didn’t keep Karla from being poisoned by someone in her own Court and having her life shortened. She didn’t keep Lucivar or Saetan from being taken. And she had insisted on Daemon playing a vicious game that he was still paying for.

If only she had realized what her inaction for so long was going to cause, perhaps she would have found another way to handle things. If only they could have continued to live their lives as they had been before so much had to change. For all of them.

Standing in the moonlight, she remembered the days when the moon would shadow across her as she dug through the dirt. She remembered how often the sparse light would guide her hands as she planted something that others desperately hoped would never grow. But when she planted it, it always did. Living memento mori could not lie and how often did she have to plant it around Briarwood and Chaillot? She had only planted it a few times when she awoke in Kaeleer and it was swiftly handled when her papa had discovered it. She hadn't had to plant it in a long time and she was thankful for a time when she could stand in the shadow of the moon, simply being.
